The category of atheism in modern times is developed through the discussion of Spinoza’s philosophy. The article traces the evolution of the image of the Dutch philosopher in some academic debates of the early eighteenth century. In particular, the notions of ‘atheism’ and ‘superstition’ will be studied, as well as the balance between religio and ratio that they define with respect to ‘Spinozism’, polemically assumed as the symbol of modern philosophical reason and its abuses.
