The aim of this paper is to explore the relationship between ‘representation’ and ‘simulation’ in relation to the classification of authorial marginalia, in particular by presenting and commenting on my taxonomy of Umberto Eco’s autograph marginalia in his modern library collections. In the first section I will make some preliminary remarks on dictionaries and encyclopaedias as models of representation and on their application to the classification of marginalia. In the middle section I will then present and discuss the four sections of Eco’s marginalia map, highlighting their original aspects and proposing concrete examples where necessary. Finally, I will offer a final reflection on the validity of the modelling choices I have made, as well as on the effectiveness of the Echian encyclopaedic model.
